The year at a glance

Nhân Dân describes May to September as the year's largest fruit harvest across the southern delta, and Tuổi Trẻ writes that durian, mangosteen, rambutan, mango and longan ripen en masse when summer arrives. Can Tho's city portal puts the city's own peak at June to August. The chart below breaks that down by fruit, using only sources that give months.

Where the fruit grows

Old district names still identify the orchard areas, even though districts were abolished in July 2025. Nhân Dân lists Vinh Kim for Lò Rèn star apple, honey orange and rambutan; Cai Be for longan, rose apple and mango; My Khanh and Phong Dien in Can Tho; Cai Mon and Cho Lach for durian and pomelo; and Tam Binh in Vinh Long for sành mandarin and rambutan. Vinh Kim and Cai Be are now in Dong Thap province; Cai Mon and Cho Lach in Vinh Long.

In Can Tho, Phong Dien has almost 9,000 of the city's roughly 24,500 hectares of fruit trees, about a third, according to the city portal. Con Son, an islet of about 75 hectares in Binh Thuy, is lined with orchards. Phong Dien grows four kinds of dâu, the local name for Baccaurea, including dâu bòn bon and dâu gia bảo; they start fruiting around April, ripen heavily from the start of the rains, usually May, and run to about September. Rambutan ripens in summer and is at its peak for only two or three weeks. Longan gives two crops a year, the main one May to July. Guava fruits all year.

Named fruits and geographical indications

Xoài cát Hòa Lộc. The Ministry of Industry and Trade describes the mango from Hoa Loc, in the former Cai Be district (now Dong Thap), as holding a geographical indication, with firm, smooth, nearly fibreless flesh. Its main harvest is March to May; growers have extended it into October to December.

Bưởi Năm Roi. Tạp chí Công Thương reports the Binh Minh Năm Roi pomelo of Vinh Long holds GI certificate No. 00036 of 29 August 2013, grows on about 4,000 hectares in the province, and usually weighs at least a kilo with few or no seeds.

Ben Tre's protected products. Bưởi da xanh (green-skin pomelo) and dừa xiêm xanh (green Siamese coconut) received geographical indications in 2018, and Cái Mơn durian in 2020. Green-skin pomelo fruits all year, according to Báo Pháp luật. Tuổi Trẻ tells the Cái Mơn durian story: the teacher Phó Lưu (1857–1947) is said to have brought durian from Cambodia early in the 20th century.

Vú sữa Lò Rèn Vĩnh Kim. This star apple holds a GI, but SGGP reported in January 2026 that its growing area has shrunk from more than 3,000 hectares in 2000 to about 50. In that report, early-season grade-1 fruit sold for more than VND 60,000 a kilo and grade 2 for VND 35,000–40,000 (reference prices, SGGP, January 2026). In Cho Lach, the Ba Long pink-butter star apple measured 17.78% sugar in a SOFRI test, against 15.2% for Lò Rèn.

Khóm Cầu Đúc. This Queen pineapple from Vi Thanh, in the former Hau Giang province (now Can Tho), has had a trademark since 2006 and a GI since November 2020, grows on about 3,000 hectares and fruits all year thanks to staggered planting.

Fruit the sources do not pin down

Mangosteen is the obvious gap. Tuổi Trẻ lists it among the fruits that ripen en masse in summer and Can Tho's portal mentions mangosteen orchards that receive visitors, but none of the sources we checked gives harvest months, so it is not on the chart. The same goes for sầu riêng in most areas: off-season (nghịch vụ) durian is now grown widely, which blurs any calendar.

We also left out a month-by-month table that circulates on a commercial travel site. It mislabels some fruits and gives no sources; where it agrees with official sources we already use those.

When this calendar will mislead you

A harvest window is a range across a whole region, not a promise for the orchard you visit. Rains, salinity and off-season growing shift the dates by weeks from year to year and from one area to the next. Early-season fruit can also cost more: SGGP's report on Lò Rèn star apple describes growers selling the first fruit of the season at high prices.

If fruit is the reason for your trip, aim for the middle of a window, not its edge, and ask at a market rather than at a tour desk. And remember that much delta fruit now moves by truck, as SGGP noted at Cai Be: the calendar tells you what is in season, not what is local to the town you are in.
